KiK: Why did you go natural?
Crystal: I decided to return back to my natural texture in 2011 because I was just curious to know what my natural hair texture looked and felt like. My mom relaxed my hair at the very early age of 7 so I’d had a relaxer almost all my life. My hair was healthy relaxed but I wanted to strive for it to be the healthiest it’s ever been.

KiK: How did you go from relaxed to natural?
Crystal: I transitioned for exactly 1 year. I’ve never had short hair so I was afraid of big chopping. During the year of transitioning I would cut 1 inch of my relaxed ends off every month. By the time October 21, 2012 came around I only had about 3 inches left to cut off. So it was a decent length for me to stay comfortable.

KiK: What is your current hair regimen?
Crystal: I wash my hair only when needed which is about every 1 1/2 – 2 weeks. I section my hair into 4 sections and pin them up with a clip. I wash each section one by one, detangling, oil rinsing and adding my deep conditioner as I go. To detangle I use a short metal aftro pick. It works wonders by the way. Once each section has my deep conditioner in it I add a plastic cap and deep condition with my Heat Therapy Wrap for anywhere from 1-2 hours. After deep conditioning I wash each section one by one, pinning up as I complete then adding my leave in conditioner and styling as usual. During the week I massage my scalp with an oil and I also apply that oil to the length of my hair.

KiK: What is your favourite hairstyle and how do you achieve and maintain it?
Crystal: My favorite hairstyle is a wash & go. I love wearing these because it lasts about 1 1/2 weeks for me. Everyday it gets bigger and bigger and I love that. To achieve a wash & go I use a whipped shea butter to seal in the moisture before applying the Eco Styler Argon Oil Gel. Once my gel is on and shingled through I finished each section with Curl Junkie’s Curls in a Bottle during the summer and Curl Solution Curl keeper in the winter since it has glycerin in it. To dry I diffuse for about 20 minutes. When completely dry I stretch my curls with a blow dryer and concentrator. To maintain this style for 7+ days I pineapple at night into a high ponytail. In the morning I just shake and go. Sometimes if I sleep hard and stretch a sections again with my blowdryer.

KiK: Any advice for new or struggling naturals?
Crystal: If you are a new natural or transitioning I first suggest you find your patience because you won’t wake up one morning and have long hair. I also suggest to get styling and transitioning idea’s from other naturals on youtube, Instagram, and Facebook. In the beginning its very easy to become a product junkie but remember that what works for one person may not work for you. Don’t rush out and buy what you see everyone using. If you feel like you would like to try new products I would suggest joining a subscription box to do so like Curl Box, CurlKit , or Curl Collection.
