Natural Wild Hair

KiK: When and why did you go natural?
Danielle: I never planned to go natural to be honest as I’d been relaxing since I was 12 years old.  However, things changed when I started adding permanent color into the mix.  I really enjoyed coloring my hair but would consistently go from light shades of brown to jet black so I started experiencing major breakage.  After cutting my hair into a bob I made the mistake again to do the same colors and my hair wouldn’t recuperate.  From there and my mother’s incessant suggestions for me to go natural I started with the baby steps of not relaxing me hair but going for weekly roller set and blow drying at the salon to ease myself into the natural hair journey.

KiK: How did you go from relaxed to natural?
Danielle: I continued going the salon for about a year focused on me not having to do my own hair because I believed it would be too hard.  A year into the transition, my stylist who didn’t speak fluent English cut off the last of my relaxed ends which was a pretty good amount.  It wasn’t planned and so after about a year got the “big chopped” and was set back to having a bob again but this time it was natural and healthy. I’ve been completely natural ever since.

Natural Hair Twist-out

KiK: What is your current hair regimen?
Danielle: Bi-weekly I shampoo my hair and deep condition it. Every week I co-wash my hair. While my hair is still soaking wet I put it in 4 sections and then split those sections into 2 totalling 8 sections.  Each section is then coated in leave-in and oils, combed out with a extra wide tooth comb and then brushed with a Denman brush.  I then I place that section in a chunky twist.  I do that all over my head and scarf it down over night.  In the morning (it’s still a bit damp but if it’s fully dry my curl pattern is too tight for my liking) I loosen the twist and fan out the strands of hair to my liking.  At night I scarf down my hair, wake up, sprits with water, fluff and go!  Until the next time I wash it again.

KiK:  What products do you use?

Wild Natural Hair

KiK: What is your favourite hairstyle?
Danielle: My favourite hairstyle is when it’s wild and curly.  The third day is the best to me.

KiK: How do you deal with tangling and/or single strand knots?
Danielle: I’m a ‘less is more’ type of girl so I only comb my hair after washing.  In between washes for the most part I do not comb out my hair.  If I’m looking to change the curl pattern that’s when I comb my hair out, moisturise with water and add leave-in and place into bantu knots.

KiK: Any advice for new or struggling naturals?
Danielle: Fight the battle only if you want too.  I gets easier as you learn more and more about what your hair loves and hates.  Also as your hair grows you’ll love it more because there’s a bit more that you can do when it comes to styling.  Keep the faith – you’ve gotten this far, keep going!
