Name: Hey my name is Kiera
Occupation: Right now I’m an Account Executive at an Advertising company
From: Where I’m from…such a tricky question! LOL! I was born in New York but I’ve lived most of my life in Barbados so I’m Baj-american as I like to call it! Lol.
Natural Since: I have been Natural since January of 2012!
KiK: When and why did you go natural?
Kiera: Well, I realised no matter what I did, my hair just wouldn’t stop breaking! It would reach a certain point and certain thickness and then it would start behaving most emotional LOL. So, one day I was like this can’t work anymore, I want to go back natural with the intention to texturise it but I fell in love with my natural hair so here I am!
KiK: How did you go from relaxed to natural?
You: I used braids and weave for a year straight! No breaks in between these protective styles and within a year, when it reached a certain length I cut off all of my relaxed ends.
KiK: What is your current hair regimen?
Kiera: My regimen is pretty basic, I’m a lazy natural! I only co-wash, I swear by it! I wash my hair every week -two weeks and deep condition it. After that I moisturise it and then either put it in big plaits or twist to let it dry. However, recently I’ve been doing a lot of wash and gos.
KiK: What are your favourite products that you use?
Kiera: My Tresemme Curly Hydration conditioner! I’m so in love with that thing! I also love me some Olive Oil Organics Moisturiser and Optimum Oil Therapy! and of course my natural oils- olive oil, coconut oil and castor oil! I just mix those up those 3 oils in a bottle and WA-LAH Heaven in one bottle!
KiK: What is your favourite hairstyle and how do you achieve and maintain it?
Kiera: I love buns! High buns! Low Buns! Middle Buns ! haha I also love the pineapple and this little side pineapple pin up thing I do! And recently my undercut! Which I refresh every two weeks.
KiK: Have you ever coloured your hair? If yes, how did affect your hair and what advice do you have for others who want to colour their natural hair?
Kiera: Yes, my hair is coloured as I write this! Well, because I’m so big on making sure my hair is moisturised and I deep condition it, I haven’t had any major issues. The only thing is I find right after I dye it, Beauty( my name for my hair) tends to be a bit dryer than usual.
Advice – If you want to dye your hair, you have to be committed to actually taking care of it as well as knowing which brands of dye work for you! That plays a huge part as well!
KiK: What advice do you have for others who are newly natural or struggling to stay natural?
Kiera: Just give it time, everything is a journey and your hair is no different! It will be worth it in the long run.
KiK: Thanks for doing this feature. Where can we keep up with you or your
hair journey online?
